Paradise Township, PA—The owner of Mount Airy Casino Resort, Louis A. DeNaples Sr., will be presented the University of Scranton’s President’s Medal in recognition of Mr. DeNaples’ longtime support and commitment to the University of Scranton. Mr. DeNaples will receive the award tonight at the President’s Business Council Sixth Annual Award Dinner at The Pierre in New York City.
In recognition of his lifetime of support, the University of Scranton recently named its new 118,000-square-foot building the Patrick and Margaret DeNaples Center in honor of Louis DeNaples’ parents. A longtime friend of the university, Louis DeNaples Sr. served two terms as a trustee, from 1987 to 1993 and again from 1995 to 2002. Mr. DeNaples also served as chair of the board from 2000 to 2002. Proceeds from the annual dinner will go directly to the university’s Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The University of Scranton is just one of many organizations that have received the generous support of Mr. DeNaples. An active community volunteer and philanthropist, Mr. DeNaples established the Mount Airy Foundation, which will manage charitable giving to programs that target youth, low-income families, and the at-risk and disadvantaged. He has also served on the boards of numerous organizations throughout northeastern Pennsylvania.
A native and resident of Dunmore, Mr. DeNaples is a self-made businessman. His career began with the founding of DeNaples Auto Parts and has grown into a conglomeration of more than 200 companies in which he has business interests, including towing, heavy-equipment sales and rentals, landfills, waste hauling, transportation, banking, and real estate.
In December 2006, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved a gaming license for Mr. DeNaples’ Mount Airy Casino Resort, which is scheduled to open on October 15, pending final gaming board approvals. Upon completion of construction work later this year, Mount Airy Casino Resort will offer a casino with 2,500 of the most current slot machines, a 188-room hotel, a spa and salon, restaurants, a nightclub, retail shopping, and meeting space. Work on Phase II of the 891-acre site will continue after the opening, with an additional 212 hotel rooms, a pool, and a casino with up to 3,000 total slot machines completed by the end of 2008.
